How Did it Originate?

One of the most versatile healing systems, Reiki works to enhance the mental, physical and spiritual aspects of life. This practice is believed to relieve suffering from major physical and psychological complications, but also works to improve minor ailments with stress reduction. Reiki is a fantastic complimentary tool to be used in conjunction with traditional medicine, as it can help the body create a better environment for healing.

Dr. Mikao Usui, born in Japan on August 15th, 1865 is credited with discovering the root system of Reiki most widely used today. The name comes from the Japanese word Rei meaning “universal life” and Ki meaning “energy.” He passed on teachings of his energy work to several grand masters, and after many generations, the traditions of his system of Natural Healing are still taught by Master Teachers training their practitioners and students. The system holds that when a person’s life force energy is flowing freely, their body and mind are healthy. Physical and emotional imbalance can occur when these key energy pathways are blocked.

What to Expect:

After an initial consultation, where your goals, expectations and health concerns are addressed with your practitioner, clients will relax on a chair or massage table, facing up, for a session lasting 60 minutes.

Loose, comfortable clothes are suggested for your appointment, as only shoes will be removed during the session. Your practitioner will either use light touch or float their hands above the body depending on the health concerns addressed as well as the client’s preferences. The recipient may feel a warming or tingling sensation as the practitioner moves through traditional Reiki hand positions. The experience should be both calming and invigorating.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, energy-based healing practice where a trained practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above your body to support deep relaxation and overall well-being. It’s rooted in the idea that balancing your body’s life force energy can help ease stress and tension.

  • 2. What happens during a Reiki session at Empowered By Nature?

After a brief consultation about your goals and any health concerns, you’ll lie on a massage table or sit comfortably (fully clothed, shoes removed). The practitioner will use light touch or float hands above your body in traditional hand positions for about 60 minutes. Many people feel warmth or tingling, but the main experience is calm and relaxation.

  • 3. Is Reiki like a massage?

No. Reiki isn’t physical bodywork like massage — there’s no muscle manipulation. It’s non-invasive and focuses on energetic balance and nervous system relaxation rather than tissue release.

  • 4. Does Reiki hurt?

Absolutely not. It should feel relaxing. Some people feel mild sensations like warmth or tingling, but it shouldn’t be painful. If anything feels uncomfortable, communicate with your practitioner.

  • 5. What can Reiki help with?

People most often seek Reiki for stress reduction, easing tension, better sleep, emotional balance, or overall wellness support. It’s a complementary approach — it’s meant to support your well-being alongside traditional medical or therapeutic care, not replace it.

  • 6. Do I have to believe in Reiki for it to work?

Nope. You don’t need any specific belief system for Reiki to be relaxing or beneficial. Many people feel effects even if they’re skeptical going in. Being open to the experience can help you notice the effects more clearly, but belief is not a requirement.

  • 7. How many sessions will I need?

There’s no single rule. Some people feel benefits after one session; others schedule multiple sessions to support chronic stress or deeper goals. Talk with your practitioner about what you’re after, and they can help you plan a rhythm that makes sense.

  • 8. Is Reiki safe?

Yes — Reiki is gentle, non-invasive, and suitable for most adults. It’s a calming complement to other health care; however, it shouldn’t replace medical treatment for serious conditions. Consult your medical provider for any major health issues.

  • 10. What will I feel afterward?

Many people report feeling deeply relaxed, calmer, mentally clearer, or emotionally lighter. Some notice subtle shifts over the next day or two — everyone’s experience is slightly different.
